For this year’s A-Z Challenge, I have decided to do “An A-Z of Sarah J Maas characters”. The characters will be from the ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) and ToG (Throne of Glass) series’ because when I first started researching this idea, I hadn’t read all of the CC (Crescent City) series.
Each day I will focus on one character from ACOTAR, TOG, or both, and I will share things such as an image of how I imagine them to look, what I like or dislike about the character, and how they affect the story.
I will try my best not to have any spoilers and if there are any, they will only be small ones – if I judge this differently to you then I apologise in advance.
Without further ado, let’s get to today’s post – Day Twenty One, U.
ACOTAR – U is for Under the Mountain Queen
The Under the Mountain Queen, or Amarantha, is a really nasty piece of work. She wants to rule all of Prythian and she tricks the High Lords and takes their magic. Tamlin is allowed to remain in the Spring Court as his father was an ally of Amarantha’s and Rhys is allowed to come and go because Amarantha chooses him as her sex slave. Rhys agrees to the role although he hates Amarantha because it allows him to keep his people safe.
Amarantha ends up taking Tamlin Under the Mountain and tortures a human woman who she believes is Feyre. When Feyre learns of this, she goes to face the Queen and get Tamlin back.
My favourite quote about Amarantha is from Feyre: “Though lovely, she wasn’t as devastatingly beautiful as I had imagined, wasn’t some Goddess of darkness and spite. It made her all the more petrifying.
ToG – U is for Ugh Maeve
Queen Maeve has spent a long time finding powerful fae and having them swear the blood oath to her and become part of her cadre. She then has them do her bidding.
*Spoiler alert* Aelin believes Maeve to be her aunt, but later on in the series, it is revealed that Maeve is actually a Valg Princess in diguise and used her magic to make everyone believe there had always been three queens and not just two. Maeve is not a nice person (which is an understatement) and she is definitely a character we love to hate.
Do you like today’s choice(s)? Who would you have chosen for this letter? Let me know in the comments.

It seems like this series has a lot of not nice characters.
