If you’re planning to travel to the UK soon, then keep in mind that packing the right items can make a huge difference. This isn’t exactly a revolutionary travel tip just for the likes of London, but people often let their guard down when they travel to other major cities, assuming them all to be pretty much the same.
Sure, London isn’t that much different to someplace like New York, but you should still be aware of some of the minor differences so that you can pack light and make the most of your trip.

Pack for London’s Unpredictable Weather
London’s weather is famously unpredictable, so packing for all kinds of conditions is essential. Be sure to bring a lightweight, waterproof jacket that you can easily carry and layer over other clothing if it’s chilly. An umbrella is also a must; collapsible ones are perfect because they don’t take up much space and fit into most bags.
For sunny days, sunglasses are handy as the city can be surprisingly bright. Having layers is key in London, where mornings might be cool, and afternoons can be warm, so versatile outfits help you stay comfortable throughout the day.
Comfortable Shoes Are a Must
Lots of UK cities, London included, is best explored on foot thanks to all of the charming streets of Notting Hill to the historic alleys of Westminster. A sturdy, comfortable pair of walking shoes will make your journey much more enjoyable, especially since many streets are cobbled, and some attractions involve lots of stairs or walking.
If you’re planning on venturing into some of London’s beautiful parks, like Hyde Park or Regent’s Park, supportive shoes will help you enjoy every step. Avoid brand-new shoes that haven’t been broken in; instead, opt for footwear you know you can walk in comfortably for hours.
Have Copies of Essential Documents
Bringing essential travel documents, like a passport, is obvious, but having copies of these documents is also helpful. Keep these copies in a different place than the originals, just in case you misplace the originals.
It’s also smart to carry digital copies on your phone or cloud storage. For example, if you need to use left luggage Piccadilly Circus, or any other storage service to store your bags while you explore, then having proof of identity can be useful for added security.
Bring an Adapter for UK Outlets
The UK uses different electrical outlets than many countries, so bringing an adapter is essential if you want to charge your devices. Universal adapters that fit multiple types of plugs can be useful if you’re also visiting other European countries during your trip.
It’s also a good idea to pack a small power bank to keep your phone charged on long days out. Many major cities offer places to plug in, but having your own charger keeps you covered during long sightseeing days.
Bring a Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated while exploring is important, and carrying a reusable water bottle is both convenient and eco-friendly. Many museums, parks, and public places have water fountains where you can refill your bottle, saving you money and reducing waste.
If you’re planning to spend the day in busy areas like Covent Garden or Trafalgar Square, you’ll appreciate having water on hand without needing to buy a bottle every time you’re thirsty. Lightweight, reusable bottles are easy to carry and reduce your environmental impact.
So whether you’re looking for holiday inspiration, a vacation, or just a daytrip, hopefully these tips will help you out.
