If you work a 9-5 job (or worse, even longer hours) then your lunch break can be the one piece of sanity in your otherwise hectic day. Your lunch break is quite often your only down time, and for that reason, you don’t want to waste any of it on things that can add to your stress levels rather than reduce them.
Here are three ways to keep your lunch break stress free:
Avoid Checking Work Emails
Your lunch break can be a great chance to check your personal emails and messages and have a chat with a friend or two, but it can also be tempting to start checking your work emails.
It seems like a good way to save yourself a little bit of time when you return to the office, but it doesn’t do a thing to switch your mind off work and get some down time. In fact, seeing a work email that needs dealing with urgently can cause your stress levels to fly up, and for most people, will lead to your lunch break being cut short.
Beat the Queues with Ordoo
There’s a common misconception that us Brits enjoy queuing. We don’t. We do it because it’s the polite thing to do, but I don’t know anyone who actually enjoys wasting their lunch break standing in a queue.
The good news? With Ordoo, a revolutionary new app, you can skip the queue.
Ordoo allows you to order and pay for your lunch (or your coffee if your coffee break doesn’t actually stretch to you getting time to queue for coffee) via your mobile phone.
You will receive a notification telling you that your order is ready and you just have to pop into the place and collect it.
The really good news? There’s a discount code at the bottom of this post that gives you a free £3 to try the app.
Get Some Fresh Air
While this one might not always be possible due to the good old British weather, when we do get a nicer day, make the most of it. Eat your lunch outside in the fresh air to feel instantly more awake and revitalised.
Being stuck indoors all day every day can quickly become monotonous and a change of environment is a great way to truly feel like you’ve had a break.
It also greatly reduces the chances you will spend your lunch break talking about work, which is often inevitable if you eat in the office break room.
And who wants to spend their breaks talking about work? It sort of defeats the object.
How to Use Ordoo, Plus Get Your Discount Code Here
Simply download the app and you’re good to go. Ordoo has hundreds of venues across the country on board with their system:
- Find a local place you love and place your order.
- Then simply pay and collect – no more waiting around.
Ordoo is really easy to use and it will stop you wasting your precious break time stressing out in a queue! It’s currently available for Apple and Android phones, but unfortunately it’s not yet available on Windows phones.
To try it out for yourself, Ordoo are giving you £3 totally free.
Just download the app and place your first order. Use code – iloveordoo – to claim your £3.

My lunch break was precious, I had to find a corner to hide away from workmates so I could switch off for half an hour!

In teaching, lunch breaks are for catching up on marking, hearing children read, preparing for the next lessons…..I never get time for a proper one! #anythinggoes

If I try really hard I think I can just about remember the days of lunch breaks! Haha. Working just mornings, I don’t get one these days. I finish at lunchtime and then it’s straight home to the little man and is pretty on stop all afternoon. This app looks fab though. Whatever next?! #AnythingGoes

So important not to check e-mails during that precious hour. Teaching means there’s so little time for a lunch break anyway and luckily my phone is switched off most of the time, otherwise it would be too tempting. #anythinggoes

My place is great. You aren’t allowed to eat at your desk so you have to take a break which is good. I used to eat at my desk a lot aty last place and it never felt like a break.

I work from home and eat at my desk. I really need to start getting up and moving around at lunch so I get a break from the monotony. #BloggerClubUK

I always used to eat at my desk when I had an office job. Then when I worked from home I barely stopped for lunch. Now I make sure to have a break and often pop outside to sit in my car for some peace and quiet #bloggerclubuk

Silly Mummy
When I worked in an office, I always left for lunch, and usually bought sweets – it helped! At one point the management decided that forcing us to take part in inter-office quiz contests during our lunch breaks would increase morale. It didn’t increase morale. #AnythingGoes
Debbie, My Random Musings
Wow, that’s a bad idea! sweets would work better then forced “fun” every time!
Laura - Autumn's Mummy Blog
In the office, my lunch is often disturbed by people asking me work-related questions. I’m guilty of checking work emails during my lunch break too! I think it’s so important to keep lunch breaks stress free. Queues eat into too much lunch time, which makes them even more stressful. #BloggerClubUK
