The Blogger’s Corner series is an interview series featuring advice and experience from bloggers whose blogs are older than six months.
If you would like to take part, you can find all of the details here.
This week, we have the lovely David from Retrohen.
1 Introduce yourself
I’m David Henningham. I was born in London in 1970. I moved to Manchester in 2006 and that’s where I currently reside.
2 Tell us a little bit about your blog
Retrohen – the home of Nostalgic Geeks brings back fond memories of the yester-years. My blogs tug on the memory strings – it’s where people can reminisce about British advertising, entertainment, leisure and consumer goods. The majority of my blogs are focused around the 1970s through to the mid-90s.
3 What can your readers learn from your blog?
The trip back down memory lane reminds readers of how things were years ago – the programmes on television, having only three television channels, life without mobile phones and the internet – it’s a reminder of how quickly our lifestyles have changed.
4 What’s your favourite thing about blogging?
The interaction with readers – I love the response from readers sharing their nostalgic memories.
5 And your least favourite thing about blogging?
I can’t think of anything – I love it – in fact I wish I had more time to do more blogging!
6 Tell us one random fact about you
I’m a trained baker.
7 If you could only blog about one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
British nostalgia from the 70s – exactly what I’m doing now.
8 What was the hardest part of starting your blog and why?
Actually making the decision to get started. I thought it would be complicated and too technical (I’m a simpleton and not good with technical stuff). To my surprise it was easier than I thought.
The next challenge was writing my first blog post – how would it be received? My first blog post took five days to write because I was so self-conscious of how it sounded so I kept editing it. Once I got over that hurdle things got easier.
9 If you could give new bloggers one piece of advice, what would it be?
Know your audience/target readers. If you miss that, engagement will be non-existent.
10 Is there anything you know now that you wish you’d known in the beginning?
I wish I’d spent more time understanding my target audience. When I first started blogging I had a figure of 500 to 700 words per blog with very few photos – I eventually found out that my target audience prefer more images and fewer words.
11 Do you have any long term goals for your blog?
To engage with more readers and keep delighting them.
12 Who’s your blogging hero?
I don’t really have a blogging hero but I follow a number of bloggers from different genres.
13 What’s your favourite social media network and why?
I’m really liking Facebook at the moment. I know Facebook has been in the news a lot recently but so many people use it and engage with posts.
14 Anything else you want to share with us?
Keep blogging and keep having fun!
15 Where can we find you? (blog link and links to any social media)
My blog, Facebook and Twitter.
